This Yellow-shafted Flicker spends most of its time on the ground feeding on ants and other ground insects. We have a lot of ants so it only stands to reason we have a few of these Northern Flickers. When the flicker really needs a bath they squish ants and use the remains to clean themselves thoroughly. Sounds gross until you realize the ants contain formic acid, which can kill small parasites on their feathers.

Looking for ants.
